  • 9×13 baking dish
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese– I prefer to shred it by hand because it melts better, but if you only have pre-shredded cheese on hand, that works too!
  • Grated parmesan cheese– to make it extra cheesy.
  • Lean ground beef– You could substitute ground turkey, Italian sausage, or half sausage and half beef.
  • Frozen cheese ravioli– Yep! Frozen! No need to cook or thaw first. Try ravioli with different fillings like spinach or mushrrrom.
  • Tomato sauce– homemade or jarred, your preference.
  • Seasonings– salt, pepper, Italian seasoning for the beef and fresh basil or flat leaf parsley for topping.

How To Make It

Preheat & Prep

Start by preheating your oven to 350ºF.
Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray or a little olive oil for easy cleanup.

Cook the Ground Beef

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until it’s browned and no longer pink.
Season with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning to taste.
Once fully cooked, stir in your favorite marinara or pasta sauce until combined and warmed through.

Build the Layers

Spoon about ½ cup of the meat sauce into the bottom of the baking dish and spread it out evenly.

Next, layer:

  • Half of the frozen ravioli in a single layer
  • Half of the remaining meat sauce
  • 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Half of the Parmesan cheese

Repeat the layers one more time:
Frozen ravioli → Meat sauce → Mozzarella → Parmesan.

Bake to Perfection

Cover the casserole tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes.

Then, remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.

Let it rest for a few minutes before serving, then dig into layers of cheesy, saucy ravioli goodness! Perfect for a cozy family dinner, potluck, or meal prep night.

Tips

  1. Make it Vegetarian: Add spinach and leave out the beef for a vegetarian option. Try different filled ravioli such as ricotta and spinach, mushroom, or even lobster filled.
  2. Serve with a simple side salad and garlic knots or cheesy garlic bread sliders.
  3. Omit the Ground Beef: Leave out the beef and use beef filled ravioli instead. Or substitute Italian sausage, ground chicken or turkey for the beef.
  4. Halve the Recipe: Make a smaller amount by halving the recipe and using a 9×9 baking dish.
  5. Cover, Then Uncover: Bake covered with foil for the first 30 minutes to keep the moisture in, then uncover for the last 10 minutes to brown the cheese on top.
  6. Let It Rest: After baking, let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. This helps the layers set and makes it easier to slice and serve.
  7. Make It Ahead: Assemble the casserole up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate until ready to bake. If baking from cold, add an extra 10–15 minutes to the cook time.
  8. Refrigerate leftovers for 3-4 days. Heat in the oven or microwave.
  9. Freeze this dish: Prepare the casserole with the cooked ground beef, but don’t bake it. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and foil and freeze up to 4 months. Bake from the freezer for 40 minutes covered and 10 minutes uncovered, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  1. When you say tomato sauce, do you mean plain tomato sauce or do you mean spaghetti sauce, such as Prego from the store?
