  1. Spray the insert with nonstick cooking spray for easier cleanup.
  2. Place the raw ground beef or turkey in the slow cooker. No need to brown it first!
  3. In a small bowl, combine the water, chili powder, paprika, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes and whisk together.
  4. Pour the spice mixture over the meat. Use a spoon to gently break up the meat and distribute the seasonings.
  5. Cover and cook on Low 6 hours or High 3 hours
  6. If you can, give it a stir halfway through to break up the meat as it cooks. If not, just stir thoroughly at the end.
  7. Once cooked, drain off excess liquid if needed. Do not drain into your sink drain as this will damage your pipes. Drain the grease into a separate container and dispose. It's best to use a metal strainer for the hot grease. Return the meat to the crock pot. Stir in 2 tablespoons of tomato paste for a boost of richness and saucy texture (optional but recommended!).
