That’s right! No cooking or browning your ground beef beforehand! For busy people, that is a game changer!
This recipe is pretty much perfect. It’s easily doubled, tripled or even quadrupled for a party (serve the meat straight from the crock pot set to warm!) Make extra and freeze the rest to have taco meat on hand at all times, which is a weeknight lifesaver. It’s dump-and-go and hands-off (my favorite meal type). Add your ingredients-including the uncooked ground beef- to your slow cooker, set it and go about your day. Come back to dinner ready to go.

Whether it’s Taco Tuesday, a party buffet, or meal prep Sunday, this recipe is flexible, freezer-friendly, and absolutely delicious.

- Crock Pot-5-8 quart size
- Nonstick Cooking Spray– for easy clean up
- 2 pounds ground beef (or ground turkey)
- 1 cup water
- 2 teaspoons chili powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste (optional, stirred in at the end for a rich finish

How To Make It
Prep the Crock Pot
Spray the insert with nonstick cooking spray for easier cleanup.
Add the Meat
Place the raw ground beef or turkey in the slow cooker. No need to brown it first!
Mix the Spices
In a small bowl, combine the water, chili powder, paprika, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, oregano, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using) and whisk together.

Dump and Go
Pour the spice mixture over the meat. Use a spoon to gently break up the meat and distribute the seasonings.

Step 5: Slow Cook
Cover and cook:
- Low: 6–7 hours
- High: 3–4 hours
If you can, give it a stir halfway through the cooking time to break up the meat as it cooks. If not, just stir thoroughly at the end.

Stir in Tomato Paste
Once cooked, drain off excess liquid into a separate bowl or container. Do not pour the grease down for drain, it will ruin your pipes. I like to pour it into a used metal can, let it harden, and dispose. Return the meat to the crock pot. Stir in 2 tablespoons of tomato paste for a boost of richness and saucy texture (optional but recommended!).
🌮 Ways to Use It
- Tacos, burritos, or taco bowls

- Nachos or quesadillas
- Taco salads or stuffed peppers
- Totchos (my personal favorite!)

- Over baked potatoes or rice

you could, if you prefer- I’d add 2 packets
