I love a classic layered pretzel salad! Although, I have no idea why it’s called a “salad”, as there clearly are no vegetables in sight. But here we are – a red, white, and blue Jell-O pretzel salad and it’s the perfect summer treat!

I took the original and put a fun red, white and blue spin on it using red and blue Jell-O, making this a great option for 4th of July!

Pretzel salad is a super simple dessert, but it is a time commitment. Just know what you’re getting in to! From start to finish, with the cooling times, this dessert will take approximately 8 hours to finish.

I find it best to make the dessert the day before you need it. This allows the Jell-O to completely set overnight, so it’s perfect when you’re ready to serve. Add a dollop of whipped cream to the top, fresh berries on the side and you have a showstopping dessert that was super easy to make.

Equipment

Pretzel Crust

  • 1 ½ cups crushed pretzels (about 3 cups whole mini pretzels)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

Creamy Layer

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 8 oz whipped topping (like Cool Whip), thawed

Jell-O Layer

  • 1 (3 oz) box blue Jell-O (berry blue)
  • 1 (3 oz) box red Jell-O (strawberry or cherry)
  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries (optional)
  • 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries (optional)
  • 2 cups boiling water (1 cup per Jell-O)
  • 2 cups cold water (1 cup per Jell-O)

*If you aren’t a fan of fruit in your Jell-O, (which I totally get!), omit the fruit.

How To Make It

I prefer to make this dessert the day before so it can set completely overnight. Because each layer needs sufficient time to chill, preparing the pretzel salad the day before helps me stay stress free!

Make the Pretzel Crust

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Crush the pretzels in a Ziploc bag using a meat mallet or rolling pin. Leave the pretzels on the chunkier side for crunch.
  • In a medium bowl, mix crushed pretzels and both sugars. Stir in melted butter until evenly combined.
  • Press firmly into the bottom of a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  • Bake for 10 minutes, then cool completely.

Cream Cheese Layer

  • In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, vanilla extract and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  • Gently fold in the whipped topping until fully combined.
  • Spread evenly over the cooled pretzel crust using an offset spatula, making sure to seal the edges (this helps prevent Jell-O from leaking through).
  • Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

Add the Blue Layer

  • In a small bowl, dissolve blue Jell-O in 1 cup boiling water. Stir until fully dissolved, then add 1 cup cold water. Let cool to room temperature.
  • Gently pour the cooled blue Jell-O over the cream layer.
  • If you are adding blueberries, gently scatter them evenly in the Jell-O layer.
  • Carefully place the dish in the refrigerator and chill in the fridge until completely set—about 3 hours.

Add the Red Layer

  • Repeat the process with the red Jell-O: dissolve in 1 cup boiling water, stir in 1 cup cold water, and let it cool to room temp.
  • Arrange sliced strawberries (if using) evenly in the red Jell-O.
  • Carefully spoon or pour the red Jell-O over the strawberry layer.
  • Chill again for at least 4 hours, or overnight until fully set.

Tips for Success

  • Let the blue Jell-O fully set before adding the red. It should be firm to the touch so the red doesn’t seep in and mix colors.
  • Cool the red Jell-O to room temperature before pouring it on top. Hot liquid will melt the blue layer.
  • Pour gently, over the back of a spoon or down the side of the dish to avoid disturbing the layer beneath.
  • Seal the Cream Cheese Layer – Spread the filling all the way to the edge to keep the Jell-O from leaking into the crust.
  • Use Fresh Fruit – Fresh berries give the best texture and flavor, but you can use frozen (just thaw and drain them first). The fruit can be left out, if you prefer.
  • Chill Time Matters – Don’t rush the chilling between layers or the colors might blend.
  • Decorate the Top – Add whipped cream, festive sprinkles, or even a mini American flag pick for extra flair!
  • Make ahead: You can make this dessert up to a day in advance. Keep it tightly covered in the fridge until serving. Leftovers will keep for 2–3 days, though the crust may soften over time.

FAQ’s

  • Can I make pretzel salad ahead of time? Yes! Patriotic Pretzel Salad is a perfect make-ahead dessert. In fact, it needs several hours of chill time between layers, so preparing it the day before your party is ideal. Just cover it tightly with plastic wrap or foil and store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve. The crust may soften slightly over time but will still taste delicious.
  • How do you keep the Jello layers from mixing? To keep the red and blue Jell-O layers from blending together, it’s important to let each layer fully set before adding the next. After pouring the blue Jell-O layer, refrigerate the dessert for at least 2-3 hours or until it’s completely firm. Then carefully spoon or pour the red layer on top, using the back of a spoon to soften the pour if needed. Taking your time during this step helps keep the layers clean and defined.
  • Can I use frozen berries in Jello salad? Yes, you can use frozen berries, but for best results, thaw and drain them first. If you add frozen fruit directly to the Jell-O, it may cause the gelatin to set unevenly or too quickly, which can affect the texture. Thawed and well-drained fruit blends more smoothly into the Jell-O and prevents excess moisture from watering down the dessert.
  • Do I have to use fruit in this recipe? Definitely not! You can leave the berries out and let the Jell-O shine. If you like the idea of fresh fruit, just not in your Jell-O, serve the berries alongside the pretzel salad.
  • Can I use a larger baking dish? Yes! This dessert can be made in a 9×13 size dish. The layers will just be thinner.

  1. What do you think about adding strawberries to the blue jello layer (the red/blue layer)?? This would make it ready faster. Thoughts?
