How To Have a Successful Garage Sale
If you’re going to have a garage sale or yard sale, let’s make it worth your effort! This is a full guide on how to have the most successful garage sale and actually make money! After years of hosting garage sales, Iโve learned one thing: the most successful yard sales arenโt last-minute โ theyโre planned.

Hereโs exactly how to organize, prep, market, and run a yard sale that clears your clutter AND puts real cash in your pocket.
Let’s get right into it.
Weeks Before Your Sale- Start Prepping
The biggest mistake people make? Waiting until the week of the sale.
Start prepping 2โ4 weeks ahead so youโre not stressed and scrambling.
Supplies to Start Collecting:
- Grocery bags for customer’s purchases-just squirrel these away when you get home from grocery shopping
- Plastic or wire hangers (ask dry cleaners or save store hangers)
- Amazon boxes for sorting and storage-just start throwing these in a corner of your home. Save the big ones for packing and the small boxes for organizing in the sale.

- Extra tables (borrow from friends or family)
- Tarps or blankets– great to lay in your yard to place items, especially if you’re limited on table space.
- Stickers, posterboard and Sharpies for pricing– The Dollar Tree is great for these items
- Money box or a money apron. I prefer to wear a money apron-the kind that servers wear, so the money stays with me at all times and it makes my cash register portable.
- Small bills and coins– go to the bank to get change a couple of days before your sale.

Declutter Every Inch of Your Home
Go through:
- Every closet
- Every drawer
- Every cabinet
- Garage, attic, storage bins
- Kidsโ rooms
- Kitchen gadgets
If you havenโt used it in a year, it probably needs to go.
Use your collected boxes to store sale items neatly by category so setup day is easier.
๐ Bonus tip: Price items as you box them. Future you will be SO grateful.

Pick the Best Days & Times to Sell
In my experience, Friday and Saturday mornings (7AMโ1PM) are GOLD.
And hereโs my honest opinion?
Fridays are often more lucrative than Saturdays. Controversial opinion: Sunday’s are not worth it. ๐ฌ
Serious shoppers come early โ so the earlier you open, the better!
Market Your Yard Sale Like a Pro
Donโt rely on just one method.
A Week Before:
- Make simple posters with date, time, address, and a few highlight items. (Or be clever and attract more buyers! See my signs below) I hang signs 4-5 days in advance of the sale.
- Post in local Facebook garage sale groups.
- List your sale on Craigslist.
- Consider a small ad in your local paper.
- Post higher-end items separately on Facebook Marketplace (youโll get WAY more money that way). Large furniture, designer clothes or shoes, large expensive toys or baby equipment, and jewelry, for example.
Important: Take your signs down after the sale. Be a good neighbor. ๐

How to Set Everything Up (Presentation Matters!)
People buy more when things are organized and easy to see.
Display Tips:
- Keep like items together.
- Hang shirts and dresses on clothing racks or a clothesline.
- Separate kidsโ clothes by size and season.

- Keep jewelry in individual bags.
- Use a shower rod between two ladders for a DIY clothing rack.

- Turn sturdy boxes upside down for makeshift tables.
- Use patio tables, kitchen tables, or borrow folding tables. Anything with a large surface is useful!
- Lay tarps or blankets in your yard or driveway for larger items or groupings.

Group small items in one box with one price:
- โBooks โ $0.50 eachโ
- โKid’s clothes โ $1 eachโ
- โAll movies in this box โ $1โ
It makes shopping faster and easier!

Price to SELL (Not to Store Again)
Rule of thumb:
Price items at 10โ30% of retail, unless theyโre brand new or high-end.
Higher priced items like:
- Designer items
- Jewelry
- Furniture
- Electronics
- Yard equipment
Sell those separately on Facebook Marketplace โ youโll almost always make more.
And most importantly: Price everything clearly.
No one wants to ask how much every single item costs. Of course expect haggling or negotiating, but start with a price on everything.
Pricing Guide
Here’s a good guideline to base your pricing on:
- Clothing: 10%-30% of the retail price ($1-$5), higher for brand new items
- Kid’s Clothing: 20%-50% of retail ($.50-$3 per piece)
- Shoes: 20%-30% of retail ($1-$10) more for brand new shoes or in demand brands
- Books and Media: $.50-$2 each
- Toys and Games: 10%-30% of retail ($.50-$5) If pieces are missing, add a note to the front of the box
- Kitchen and Home: 10%-30% of retail
- Furniture: 20%-40% If pieces are in excellent condition, are brand new or antiques, you’ll be better selling these on Facebook Marketplace or elsewhere to get the price you want. In my experience garage salers typically do not plan on spending $100’s on furniture.
- Electronics: 20%-40%- test items and price fairly. Set electronics, lamps, kitchen appliances near an outlet so people can see that they work.
Garage Sale Pricing Guide
| Category | Pricing Guideline | Typical Price Range |
|---|---|---|
| Clothing | 10โ30% of retail | $1โ$5 |
| Kidsโ Clothing | 25โ50% of retail | $0.50โ$3 |
| Shoes | 20โ30% of retail | $1โ$10 |
| Books | Flat pricing | $0.25โ$1 |
| DVDs/CDs | Flat pricing | $1โ$2 |
| Toys & Games | 10โ30% of retail | $0.50โ$5 |
| Kitchen Items | 10โ30% of retail | $0.50โ$5 |
| Small Appliances | 10โ30% of retail | $5โ$20 |
| Home Decor | 10โ30% of retail | $2โ$15 |
| Furniture | 20โ40% of retail | $10โ$75+ |
| Electronics | 20โ40% of retail | $5โ$75+ |
Pro Tip
List higher-value items like furniture, electronics, and designer pieces on Facebook Marketplace to get the most money โ yard sale shoppers are usually looking for deals.
Garage Sale Timeline:
A Couple Days Before the Sale
- Double-check everything is priced.
- Finish sorting categories.
- Gather tables and display items.
- Print and display your Venmo QR code. Having electronic options for paying WILL give you higher sales! I’ll print out my QR code for Venmo, PayPal and Zelle.
- Get change (lots of $1s, $5s, and quarters). I personally do not want to deal with dimes or nickels for change so I price by the quarter, fifty cents or whole dollars.
- Prepare your cash box or apron.
- Get your coffee ready, you’ll be up early on sale day!
The Day Before
- Set out or stage what you can in the garage or covered area.
- Pre-build clothing racks and hang your clothes.
- Stack boxes by category.
- Make your setup morning quick and smooth.

During the Sale
1. Be Friendly & Expect Bargaining
Smile. Greet people. Be open to negotiating. Itโs part of the fun.
2. Offer Bundle Deals
Especially near the end of the day:
- Fill a bag for $5
- Buy 1, get 1 free
- Bundle toys together
Moving volume = less to haul back inside.
3. Have a Free Box
This is one of my favorite tricks.
Put a โFREEโ box at the end of your driveway with:
- Stained towels
- Half-used paint
- Broken items
- Things that need repair
- Mismatched items
- Random cords
Things that donโt have value to you might have value to someone else โ and it keeps items out of the landfill.
4. Rearrange as Needed
As items are sold rearrange them on tables to fill in holes. Bring items up from the ground on to tables so they are more easy to see. More items to the front to sell faster.

Create a Welcoming Vibe
This might sound extraโฆ but it works.
- Play light background music.
- Have kids run a lemonade stand. Sell cold drinks from a cooler for $1 or sell individual chips and snacks.
- Keep your space neat and inviting.
The longer people stay, the more they buy.
Keep Valuables Close
Keep higher-value items near you or on a separate table you can monitor easily. I prefer to wear a money apron rather than use a cash box so I always know where the money is.
After the Sale
Donate Quickly
Have a plan to drop off leftovers immediately. Some donation centers even offer pickup.
Donโt bring everything back inside โ that defeats the purpose.
Take Down All Signs
Be courteous and clean up your advertising.
Final Thoughts: Make It Worth Your Time
A successful yard sale isnโt just about making money โ itโs about clearing space, simplifying your home, and starting fresh. If you’re going to do this, do it the right way so it’s all worth your hard work.
Prep early.
Price to sell.
Organize well.
Market intentionally.
And most importantly โ donโt drag the clutter back inside.
Youโve got this. ๐ช
