What is Puppy Chow?

Despite the name, puppy chow (also called Muddy Buddies) isn’t for dogs! It’s a popular sweet snack made with Chex cereal coated in melted chocolate and powdered sugar. The traditional Muddy Buddy recipe is usually found at parties around the holiday season. It’s such a crowd favorite! This lemonade version swaps traditional peanut butter and chocolate for bright citrus flavors, making it perfect for spring and summer.

I remember the first time I was introduced to the powdered sugar coated treat. I was around 9 and it was at an extended family’s Christmas party. Before then I had never heard of muddy buddies or puppy chow. WOW! The combination of chocolate and peanut butter, coated in sweet powdered sugar and the crunch of the Chex cereal is irresistible. I was hooked instantly!

Ingredients You’ll Need

Lemonade Puppy Chow Ingredients

  • 9 cups Chex cereal (Rice or Corn Chex both work well)
  • 10 ounces white almond bark, white chocolate melting wafers, or about 1½ cups white chocolate chips (Tip: if using white chocolate chips, add a teaspoon of coconut oil to the chips for melting so they melt smooth and easily. White chocolate tends to be fickle and can seize easily)
  • ¼ cup salted butter
  • 4 teaspoons fresh lemon zest (about 2 lemons)
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice (about 2 large lemons)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

How to Make Lemonade Puppy Chow

Step 1: Prepare the Cereal

Place the Chex cereal into a very large mixing bowl. Set aside while you prepare the lemon coating.

Step 2: Melt the Lemon White Chocolate

In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine the white chocolate, butter, fresh lemon zest, and lemon juice.

Microwave for 1 minute, then stir well. Continue heating in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until the mixture is completely smooth and melted. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate.

Step 3: Coat the Cereal

Pour the warm lemon white chocolate mixture over the cereal.

Using a large rubber spatula, gently fold the cereal until every piece is evenly coated. Work carefully so the cereal stays as intact as possible.

Step 4: Add the Powdered Sugar

Sprinkle the powdered sugar over the coated cereal.

Gently toss and fold until every piece is completely coated with the powdered sugar. If you prefer, you can transfer everything to a large zip-top bag and gently shake until evenly coated.

Step 5: Cool Completely

Spread the puppy chow into a single layer on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet or over parchment paper on the counter.

Allow it to cool for at least 1 hour, or until completely dry to the touch.

Tips for the Best Puppy Chow

  • Fresh lemons provide the brightest flavor and make a big difference.
  • Stir gently when coating the cereal to avoid crushing it.
  • Don’t skip the cooling time. If the puppy chow is still warm when sealed in a container, condensation can form, causing it to become soft instead of crispy. I like to let it sit on the paper towels at least an hour before closing in an airtight container.
  • For extra lemon flavor, add an additional teaspoon of lemon zest after coating.
  • If using white chocolate chips, add a teaspoon of coconut oil to the chips for melting so they melt smooth and easily. White chocolate tends to be fickle and can seize easily.

Variations

Lemon Berry Puppy Chow

Mix in freeze-dried strawberries or raspberries after the puppy chow has cooled. Or use blueberry Chex for a lemon blueberry version.

Lemon Coconut

Add shredded sweetened coconut for a tropical twist.

Lemon Sprinkle Mix

Perfect for birthdays or baby showers—add yellow sprinkles after coating with powdered sugar.

Lemon Lime

Replace half of the lemon juice and zest with fresh lime for a citrus blend.

A bowl of powdered cereal snack sits on a wooden surface, surrounded by lemon halves, a grater, a citrus-themed towel, and a citrus juicer.

Storage

Store Lemonade Puppy Chow in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

For longer storage, freeze it in a freezer-safe bag for up to 2 months. Let it thaw at room temperature before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use bottled lemon juice?

Fresh lemon juice is highly recommended since it provides a brighter, fresher flavor than bottled juice.

What type of Chex cereal works best?

Rice Chex and Corn Chex are both excellent choices. Either one will give you a delicious crunchy texture.

Can I use white chocolate chips instead of almond bark?

Yes! White chocolate chips, white candy melts, or almond bark all work well. Almond bark generally melts the smoothest.

Why is my puppy chow soggy?

Most often it’s because it was stored before it had completely cooled. Let it sit uncovered for at least an hour before transferring it to an airtight container.

Can I make this ahead of time?

Absolutely! This is a great make-ahead party snack and stays fresh for several days when stored properly.

Ingredients

  • 9 cups Rice Chex cereal try blueberry Chex for lemon blueberry flavor
  • 10 ounces white almond bark white chocolate melts, or 1½ cups white chocolate chips (see note)
  • ¼ cup salted butter
  • 4 teaspoons lemon zest about 2 lemons
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice about 2 lemons
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  • Place the Chex cereal in a large mixing bowl and set aside.
  • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the white chocolate, butter, lemon zest, and lemon juice.
  • Microwave for 1 minute, then stir. Continue microwaving in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until the mixture is smooth and fully melted.
  • Pour the warm lemon mixture over the cereal and gently fold until every piece is evenly coated.
  • Add the powdered sugar and gently toss until the cereal is completely coated. A large zip-top bag also works well for this step.
  • Spread the puppy chow onto parchment paper or a parchment-lined baking sheet in an even layer.
  • Let cool completely for at least 1 hour before storing in an airtight container. Letting it cool completely prevents the snack mix from getting soggy or stale prematurely.
  • Serve immediately or store in an airtight container for later snacking.

Notes

  • Fresh lemon juice and zest give the best flavor.
  • Be sure the puppy chow is completely cool before storing. Sealing it while still warm traps moisture, causing it to lose its crunchy texture.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to one week or freeze for up to two months.
  • If using white chocolate chips add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil to the chips before microwaving. White chocolate hips can be finicky and seize easily, the coconut oil ensure it will be smooth and pourable.
