Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Braid

Sharing is caring!

This Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Braid is an easy fall dessert made with flaky puff pastry, canned caramel apple pie filling, and a sweet cinnamon cream cheese layer. It looks impressive enough for a holiday dessert table but is surprisingly simple to make!

The combination of caramel apples, cinnamon cream cheese, and buttery puff pastry makes this braid taste like something you picked up at a cozy fall bakery—but you only need a handful of ingredients to make it at home.

And because we’re using canned caramel apple pie filling, there’s no peeling or chopping a pile of apples. Just fill, braid, bake, drizzle with caramel, and enjoy! It looks stunning, but is super easy to put together!

I love that this dessert is easy to change up. Any pie filling flavor can be used; blueberry, cherry, or peach would all be equally delicious.

This Caramel Apple Dump Cake, Caramel Apple Poke Cake, or Apple Cider Bundt cake would also be delicious to make for a crowd in fall.

Ingredients

For the Caramel Apple Braid

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 (20–21 ounce) can caramel apple pie filling
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon, divided
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg, beaten, for egg wash
  • 1 tablespoon coarse sugar, optional

For the Caramel Drizzle

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk
  • 1–2 tablespoons caramel sauce (I’m just using caramel sauce ice cream topping)

How to Make a Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Braid

1. Prepare the oven

Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

The parchment makes cleanup easy and also helps prevent any caramel that escapes from sticking to the pan. If your puff pastry comes rolled in parchment, just use that.

2. Make the cinnamon cream cheese filling

Add the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract to a small bowl.

Beat or stir until smooth and creamy.

The cinnamon is a small addition, but it really makes this dessert taste like fall!

A glass bowl with a thick, beige batter, partially mixed, sits on a pink-and-white striped cloth. The bowl shows swirls in the batter and some remains are stuck around the sides.

3. Prepare the puff pastry

Place the thawed puff pastry on the parchment-lined baking sheet.

Gently roll it out just enough to smooth any creases. Don’t roll it too thin—you want the pastry to puff up into flaky layers while it bakes. I roll 1/3″- 1/4″ thickness.

4. Cut the pastry

Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut diagonal strips about 1 inch apart on both sides of the filling.

Cut from the outside edge toward the filling, stopping before you reach the center.

Note: You can cut the pastry after adding the filling, if you prefer.

4. Add the cream cheese

Spread the cinnamon cream cheese mixture down the center third of the puff pastry, leaving about an inch of space at the top and bottom.

A sheet of pastry dough with diagonal slits on both sides, filled in the center with a creamy nut butter mixture, ready to be braided or folded before baking.

5. Add the caramel apple filling

Spoon the canned caramel apple pie filling over the cream cheese.

If your pie filling has a lot of excess liquid, use a slotted spoon to transfer the apples. This helps keep the pastry from becoming soggy.

If the apple pieces are especially large, chop them into smaller pieces before adding them. I like to use kitchen shears to cut the apples into smaller pieces right there in the can before spooning it.

6. Braid the pastry

Fold the top and bottom edges of the pastry over the filling.

Then begin folding the strips over the apple filling, alternating from one side to the other.

Continue until you reach the bottom, creating a braided pastry.

Don’t worry if it isn’t perfect! Once it’s baked and drizzled with caramel, it will look beautiful.

7. Add the egg wash

Brush the entire pastry with the beaten egg.

If you want a little extra sparkle and crunch, sprinkle the top with extra sugar and cinnamon.

8. Bake

Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the puff pastry is puffed and deeply golden brown.

Keep an eye on it toward the end of the baking time since ovens can vary.

9. Cool

Allow the braid to cool on the baking sheet for at least 15 minutes before adding the drizzle.

This gives the filling a chance to set slightly and makes the braid easier to slice.

10. Make the drizzle

Whisk together the powdered sugar and milk until smooth.

Drizzle the icing over the cooled caramel apple braid, then drizzle with caramel sauce.

Slice and serve!

Tips for Making the Best Caramel Apple Braid

Don’t overfill the pastry. It can be tempting to use every last bit of the pie filling, but too much filling can make the braid difficult to close and cause the filling to leak out while baking.

Drain excess liquid. Canned pie filling can vary in consistency. If yours is particularly juicy, use a slotted spoon to transfer the apples.

Thaw the puff pastry completely. If the pastry is still frozen, it can crack when you try to braid it.

Don’t skip the egg wash. The beaten egg gives the pastry that beautiful golden-brown, shiny finish.

Let it cool before drizzling. If the braid is piping hot, the icing will melt right off.

Can I Use Homemade Apple Pie Filling?

Absolutely! If you have homemade apple pie filling on hand, you can use it instead of the canned caramel apple pie filling.

For the easiest version, though, canned caramel apple pie filling is the shortcut that makes this recipe so quick.

Can I Make This Ahead of Time?

Yes. You can bake the caramel apple braid several hours ahead of serving.

Let it cool completely and store it loosely covered at room temperature for the day. Add the powdered sugar and caramel drizzle shortly before serving.

For the best texture, I recommend serving it the same day.

How to Store Leftover Caramel Apple Braid

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

The puff pastry will soften as it sits. To crisp it back up, warm individual slices in a 325°F oven or toaster oven for several minutes.

I don’t recommend microwaving it if you’re trying to keep the pastry crisp.

What to Serve With Caramel Apple Braid

This is delicious served slightly warm with:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Whipped cream
  • A drizzle of warm caramel sauce
  • A dusting of powdered sugar
  • A cup of coffee
  • Hot apple cider

For an extra-special fall dessert, serve a warm slice with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and extra caramel sauce.

Easy Variations

Add chopped pecans

Sprinkle ¼–½ cup chopped pecans over the apple filling before braiding for a little crunch.

Add more cinnamon

If you’re a big cinnamon fan, add another ¼ teaspoon to the cream cheese filling or sprinkle a little cinnamon over the apples.

Add a maple twist

Add 1 tablespoon of maple syrup to the cream cheese mixture for a delicious maple-cinnamon flavor.

Use crescent dough

You can substitute refrigerated crescent dough for the puff pastry. The finished braid will be softer and more bread-like rather than flaky.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use regular apple pie filling?

Yes! Regular canned apple pie filling works perfectly. You’ll just miss some of the caramel flavor, so add an extra drizzle of caramel sauce over the finished braid.

Do I have to braid the pastry?

No. If you don’t want to braid it, you can make a simple apple-filled puff pastry turnover instead. The braid is mostly for presentation.

Can I add nuts?

Absolutely. Pecans or walnuts would both be delicious with the caramel apple and cinnamon flavors.

Why did my puff pastry turn soggy?

The most common reason is excess liquid from the apple filling. Use a slotted spoon to remove the apples from the can and avoid adding too much of the liquid.

Can I freeze this caramel apple braid?

For the best texture, I recommend freezing the unbaked braid rather than freezing the finished dessert.

Assemble the braid, but don’t add the egg wash. Place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until firm. Wrap tightly and place in a freezer-safe bag or container.

When ready to bake, you can bake it from frozen, adding several extra minutes to the baking time. Brush with egg wash just before baking.
