Tips for the Best Baked Pasta Casserole
- Cover the casserole tightly while baking so the pasta cooks evenly.
- Add extra mozzarella cheese on top for a cheesier casserole.
- Fresh basil or parsley adds great flavor and color before serving.
- Boiling the noodle beforehand is unnecessary because they will bake up perfectly in the oven, but if you chose to cook the pasta first, slightly undercook the pasta beforehand since it continues cooking in the oven.
- Let the casserole rest for 5–10 minutes before serving.
What To serve with Your Pasta Bake
- garlic knots
- Caesar salad
- simple side salad with vinaigrette

Best Meatballs for Casseroles
Frozen meatballs are one of the easiest ways to make a quick and hearty casserole dinner. Fully cooked frozen meatballs work best because they heat through evenly while the casserole bakes and add tons of flavor without extra prep work.
Italian-style meatballs are my favorite for this recipe because the seasoning pairs perfectly with the pasta sauce, mozzarella cheese, and Italian herbs. Homestyle or beef meatballs also work great if you prefer a milder flavor. I like the Simek brand a lot, that I find at Publix. Bremer sold at Aldi and the Good and Gather brand at Target are also delicious.
For the best texture, choose medium-sized meatballs instead of extra large ones. Smaller meatballs distribute more evenly throughout the casserole so every bite gets plenty of meatballs, pasta, sauce, and cheese.
Some great options are:
- Italian-style frozen meatballs
- Homestyle beef meatballs
- Turkey meatballs for a lighter option
- Angus beef meatballs
- Homemade baked meatballs
If you’re shopping at Sam’s Club or Costco, the large family-size bags are perfect for easy casseroles like this. You can use about 40 smaller meatballs or around 24 larger meatballs depending on the size.
Homemade meatballs can also be used if you have leftovers in the freezer. Just make sure they are fully cooked before adding them to the casserole.
For extra flavor, try using mozzarella-filled meatballs or seasoned chicken parmesan meatballs for a fun twist on the recipe.

Tips
- Use Uncooked Pasta for Convenience-Choose a sturdy pasta like penne, rotini, or ziti. These hold up well and absorb flavor while cooking.
- Use Precooked or Frozen Meatballs-To save time, use frozen or pre-cooked meatballs. If using raw meatballs, sear them first to hold up while baking.
- Stir Everything Together Before Baking-Mix the pasta, sauce, liquid, and seasonings well before adding the meatballs on top. This ensures even cooking.
- Cover While Baking-Cover the dish tightly with foil to prevent the pasta from drying out.
- Add Cheese– Stir in shredded cheese at the end of baking, or sprinkle on top in the last 10 minutes to create a melty, cheesy topping.
- Let It Rest Before Serving– After baking, let the casserole sit for 5-10 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken and the flavors to meld.
