This easy green bean casserole is made with frozen green beans, creamy mushroom soup, Parmesan cheese, Worcestershire sauce, and plenty of crispy fried onions. Why You’ll Love Crock Pot Green Bean Casserole

- Perfect for Thanksgiving — It’s a classic holiday side dish with a crock pot twist.

- Extra crispy onions — Half go into the casserole and the rest get toasted and piled on top.
Ingredients

Green Beans
I use three 10-ounce bags of frozen cut green beans, thawed. Frozen green beans work really well because they hold up nicely during cooking.
You can also use four 14.5-ounce cans of green beans, drained, if that’s what you have in the pantry.
Cream of Mushroom Soup
This recipe uses one can of regular condensed cream of mushroom soup and one can of cream of mushroom soup with roasted garlic. The roasted garlic adds extra flavor, but you can absolutely use two cans of regular cream of mushroom soup if you can’t find it.
Parmesan Cheese
A little grated Parmesan adds a salty, cheesy flavor to the creamy mushroom sauce.
Worcestershire Sauce
Don’t skip this! Just one tablespoon adds a little savory, umami flavor that makes the casserole taste even better.
Crispy Fried Onions
Of course, we need crispy fried onions! Half are stirred into the casserole and the other half are toasted in a skillet and added right before serving.
I’m using a 6-quart sized crock pot for this recipe. I have this one from Drew Barrymore.
How to Make Crock Pot Green Bean Casserole
1. Add Everything to the Crock Pot
Add the thawed green beans, both cans of condensed cream of mushroom soup, Parmesan cheese, Worcestershire sauce, milk, black pepper, salt, and half of the crispy fried onions to a 6-quart crock pot.
Stir everything together until well combined.

2. Cook
Cover and cook on LOW for 2 ½ to 3 hours, or until the green beans are tender and the casserole is hot and creamy.
Give everything a good stir once it’s cooked.
3. Keep Warm
Turn the crock pot to the WARM setting while you finish getting Thanksgiving dinner on the table.
This is one of my favorite things about making Thanksgiving sides in the crock pot. You don’t have to worry about finding room in the oven or having another dish taking up space on the stovetop.
4. Toast the Fried Onions
For the best crispy topping, heat a dry non-stick skillet over medium heat.
Add the remaining crispy fried onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they’re lightly toasted and golden brown.
Keep an eye on them because they can go from perfectly toasted to burned pretty quickly!
5. Add the Topping
Just before serving, sprinkle the toasted crispy fried onions over the top of the green bean casserole.
Then dig in!

Can I Use Canned Green Beans?
Yes! If you prefer canned green beans, you can substitute four 14.5-ounce cans of green beans for the frozen green beans.
Make sure to drain the cans well before adding them to the crock pot.
Since canned green beans are already cooked, check the casserole toward the earlier end of the cooking time so they don’t become overly soft.
Can I Make Green Bean Casserole Ahead of Time?
Absolutely! This is one of the reasons I love making this Thanksgiving green bean casserole in the crock pot.
You can assemble the casserole earlier in the day and cook it according to the recipe. Once it’s hot and cooked through, switch the crock pot to WARM until you’re ready to serve.
I recommend waiting to add the final toasted crispy onion topping until right before serving. That way, the onions stay crispy instead of getting soft.
Thanksgiving Green Bean Casserole Tips
Thaw the frozen green beans first. This helps the casserole cook evenly and prevents excess water from making the sauce too thin.
Don’t skip the Worcestershire sauce. It adds a little savory flavor without making the casserole taste like Worcestershire sauce.
Toast the onions right before serving. This gives you that delicious crispy topping everyone loves.
Use the WARM setting after cooking. It’s perfect for keeping the casserole hot while you’re finishing the rest of Thanksgiving dinner.
Don’t have a 6-quart crock pot? A slightly smaller or larger crock pot will work, but the cooking time may vary.
Can I Use Two Cans of Regular Cream of Mushroom Soup?
Yes! The roasted garlic cream of mushroom soup adds a little extra flavor, but it isn’t necessary.
If you can’t find the roasted garlic variety, simply use two 10.5-ounce cans of regular condensed cream of mushroom soup.

Storage
Store leftover green bean casserole in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days.
For the best texture, store any extra crispy fried onion topping separately if possible. Reheat the casserole and add fresh toasted onions on top.
Can You Freeze Green Bean Casserole?
Yes, although the texture of the green beans and creamy sauce may change slightly after freezing and thawing.
For the best results, freeze the casserole without the crispy onion topping. Allow it to cool completely, transfer it to a freezer-safe container, and freeze for up to about 2 months.
Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat until hot. Add freshly toasted crispy fried onions just before serving.
How do I keep green bean casserole warm?
Once the casserole is cooked, turn your crock pot to the WARM setting. Add the crispy onion topping right before serving.
Why are my fried onions not crispy?
If the fried onions are added too early, they can soften in the creamy casserole. For the crispiest topping, toast the remaining onions in a dry skillet and add them immediately before serving.
