What Is Monster Mix?
Monster Mix is a fun Halloween twist on classic Chex Mix. Instead of a savory seasoning, this version is coated in a sweet brown sugar and maple glaze.
The crunchy cereal, pretzels, and peanuts bake in the glaze until crisp. Once everything has cooled, candy corn and Halloween M&Ms are stirred in for a colorful, festive finishing touch.
It’s basically the Halloween snack mix of your dreams—sweet, salty, crunchy, and completely snackable!
Ingredients
You only need a handful of simple ingredients to make this Halloween party snack.
For the Snack Mix
Rice Chex and Corn Chex: Using both cereals gives the mix plenty of crunch and texture.
Mini pretzel twists: These add the perfect salty crunch.
Peanuts: I use lightly salted peanuts, but you can use unsalted if you prefer.
Halloween M&Ms: Regular M&Ms work too, but the Halloween colors make this snack mix extra fun.
Candy corn: Because what’s Halloween without candy corn?
For the Brown Sugar Glaze
Butter: Use unsalted butter so you can control the saltiness.
Brown sugar: I use light brown sugar, but dark brown sugar works too.
Pure maple syrup: Maple syrup adds a delicious fall flavor to the glaze.
Vanilla extract: Just a little vanilla rounds out the sweetness.

How to Make Monster Mix
1. Prepare the oven
Preheat your oven to 275°F. Line a large sheet pan with parchment paper.
The parchment makes cleanup much easier and helps keep the snack mix from sticking to the pan.
2. Make the brown sugar glaze
Add the butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, and vanilla extract to a microwave-safe bowl.
Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring halfway through, until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth.

3. Mix the cereal, pretzels, and peanuts
Add the Rice Chex, Corn Chex, pretzels, and peanuts to a large mixing bowl.
Pour the warm brown sugar mixture over everything and gently stir until all of the cereal and snacks are evenly coated.
4. Bake the Monster Mix
Spread the mixture onto the parchment-lined sheet pan in an even layer.
Bake for about 30 minutes, stirring or flipping the mixture halfway through baking.
This helps everything bake evenly and keeps the snack mix from getting too dark on one side.

5. Add the candy
Let the baked snack mix cool completely.
Once cooled, stir in the candy corn and Halloween M&Ms.
Don’t add the candy before baking! The M&Ms can melt and the candy corn can become sticky and hard.

Tips for Making the Best Monster Mix
Use parchment paper. It makes both cleanup and removing the cooled snack mix much easier.
Let it cool completely. The glaze will continue to crisp up as the mixture cools.
Add the candy after baking. This keeps the M&Ms colorful and the candy corn intact.
Make a double batch for a party. One batch makes about 16 servings, but this snack mix goes quickly!
Spread it into an even layer. This helps the cereal and pretzels bake evenly and get nice and crunchy.
Easy Monster Mix Substitutions
This Halloween snack mix is very easy to customize.
Try swapping or adding:
- Reese’s Pieces instead of M&Ms
- Bugles
- Cheerios
- Chocolate Chex
- Honey Nut Chex
- Mini marshmallows
- Chocolate chips
- White chocolate chips
- Pecans or almonds instead of peanuts
- Other Halloween candies
You can really make this recipe your own based on what you have in the pantry.
Can I Make Monster Mix Ahead of Time?
Yes! Monster Mix is a great make-ahead Halloween treat.
Prepare the snack mix according to the recipe and allow it to cool completely before storing it.
Keep it in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.
It’s perfect for making a few days before a Halloween party so you have one less thing to worry about on party day.
How to Store Halloween Snack Mix
Store Monster Mix in an airtight container at room temperature.
Keep the container sealed when you’re not serving it to help the cereal and pretzels stay crunchy.
For parties, I like to put the snack mix into a large bowl right before guests arrive and keep the rest sealed so I can refill the bowl as needed.
Can I Freeze Monster Mix?
I recommend enjoying this snack mix fresh for the best texture. Freezing can cause the cereal and candy to lose some of their crunch once thawed.
Luckily, it keeps for up to two weeks in an airtight container, so there’s really no need to freeze it!
When to Serve Monster Mix
